God Momus, the god of mockery, satire and irony who was exiled from the Olympus for his bad behaviour, arrives to the Carnival of Donostia with his entourage between the 23th and 27th of February.
Momus is one of the main characters of San Sebastian Carnival. It is considered the owner of Carnival and for this reason its citizens trust him the keys of the city during these dates. Take the tourist bus of San Sebastian City Tour Hop-on Hop-off and get off at stop 8 Zubieta for not missing it. The whimsical character of God Momus asks San Sebastian residents to dance and have fun with the different charanga bands and troupes, creating a festive atmosphere that brings joy to children and the elderly. If you get off at stop 15 Catedral Del Buen Pastor you will be able to enjoy the presentation of all the troupes.
This character started to be celebrated in Donostia during the carnival of 1814. It started being a festivity organised for a group of students, friends and craftsmen. Years later, in 1900, this celebration became more and more important in Donostia, and at some point it was considered a referential city concerning carnival, even being compared with Venice.
This year God Momus is more decided than ever to triumph the city and he has ordered to overcome embarrassment so he will be honoured as he deserves. The panoramic bus San Sebastian City Tour will show you the points where God Momus will spread out joy and good mood.
